On the night of November 16, 1972, Capt Ken Theate and EWO Maj Norb Maier flying F-105G 63-8359,561st TFS was flying an Iron Hand SAM suppression mission near Vinh, in the southern part of North Vietnam. Two SAMs suddenly came up through a dense 3000 ft. cloud base. The second
detonated just beneath the F-105G, and its crew ejected. 63-8359 was the last of 393 F-105s lost during the Vietnam War. The crew was rescued by SAR.
